Well this Saturday we had our third British International Championship Club race of the season and we could not have been more pleased with our performance. The birds were at St Philbert and were liberated at 7am in broken cloud and sunshine and winds forecast to be from the southeast all the way home. Because of the wind direction we did not expect to beat the westerly flyers so we’re just looking for good returns as we had sent 250 long distance birds for training and topped up with 20 middle distance pigeons to try and gain positions in the race. We always know that our distance birds don’t keep up with our own faster pigeons and this time was no different. From the 20 middle distance pigeons we sent we timed 5 first and had 8 in our first 10 birds home so just as we expected.
What we did not expect was for our hen to prov score 2nd Section 2371b and 8th National 5031b. She covered the 282 miles in 5 hours 12 minutes for a velocity of 1586 ypm doing far better than we hoped for.
She is a granddaughter of Crammond and Langstaff’s ‘Spartacus’ 1st National NFC Messac 5796 birds and also a granddaughter of Mark Williamson’s ‘Lady B’ winner of 1st Open MNFC Bordeaux 564 miles.
This hen also won last year as a baby 1st Open Thames North & Eastern Counties FC Gold ring race from Guernsey so we were hoping she would carry on as she left off last year.
We were also pleased with how the long distance birds performed as this was just setting them up for the longer ones and with a few next morning we had 255/270 on the ets clock from the total send.
Congratulations to Lee Luscombe for winning the race.
