Yesterday we had the last race of the season from Fougeres with the British International Championship Club.
The birds were liberated at 8.00am under almost clear skies with winds very light southeast at the race point and changing to southerly in the channel and southwest over the mainland. The conditions were right for a really nice race for the youngsters which was a change from all the terrible weather we have had for channel racing this year. We thought that as they had made decent work of the bad weather in recent weeks they should take this in their stride with the experience they have had. We started off the morning with a nice breakfast at our local farm shop and Troy, Darran and I were joined there by Roger Lowe and Luke Oglesby. After much chat about times we decided that a decent pigeon would be just over the 4 hour mark so at 11.00am we headed back home as we also had a club race from Truro with the Berkshire Federation. With both races being around 216 mile and the Truro birds being released 15 minutes later we realised the birds would be coming home roughly the same time so it would be hard to know which was which before they went through the trap. Around 12.04 we had birds coming up the field but realised in an instant it was the Truro birds as we sent 58 and had 30 come together and that definitely wasn’t going to happen from fougeres. We didn’t have to wait long though as at 12.11 we had 6 birds diving all over the sky full of flying heading to the lofts. They were from Fougeres and once they landed all went through the trap in seconds. The second bird clocked two seconds after the first was our all pooler and the third bird clocked again two seconds later was last weeks 1st Section, 3rd National NFC Falaise. Our first pigeon on the clock provisionally scored 2nd Section, 4th Open British Barcelona Club & 3rd Section, 12th Open British International Championship Club with a velocity of 1509ypm for the 216 mile journey. With the 6 birds being clocked together the other 6 should figure highly in the result too. We were really pleased how the whole team performed yesterday as we sent 83 and had around 50 in the first hour and 61/83 back in total. Hopefully we will have a few more drop in this morning. The breeding of the first 6 is as follows: 1 - N53222 Went to the NFC Falaise race and came first thing next morning Full brother to 3rd National BICC Alencon 4763b 2023 Sire is a son of ‘Rolex’ 1st National NFC Saintes 2015 paired to a daughter of J Hooymans ‘Harry’ Dam is a daughter of ‘Southfield Champ’ 1st National NFC Saintes paired to Mark Williamson’s ‘Lady B’ 1st Open MNFC Bordeaux. 2 - N53242 Been to the channel 4 times this year now having the BICC Guernsey, BBC Guernsey, NFC Falaise and now Fougeres. Yesterday we had the final race in this years National Flying Club programme - the Falaise Youngbird National and just like the rest of the season racing the channel a tough race was on the cards.
The birds were liberated at 7.00am with east north east winds predicted on the journey home. We originally entered 50 for this race but looking at the forecasts during the week we decided to reduce that down to a team of 29 as the conditions looked tricky for youngsters and there is always a risk that they won’t cross due to their inexperience. We decided it would be possible to do 45mph if they hit on so we started looking at the lofts around 11.00am. At 11.37 a little cheq pied hen hit the loft and after a short wait entered the loft to provisionally score 1st Section, 3rd National. She finished the 178 mile course with a velocity of 1137 ypm. Mark had been telling us all morning he fancied this pied hen but when he pooled his pigeons picked the wrong ring number! With another 3 ybs at 11.56, 12.53 and 12.57 it looks like we will take the first 4 in the section. The breeding of our first 4 are as follows: 1 - GB24N53180 Sire is a son of Marc Pollins ‘Bruce’ 1st National St Vincent Dam is a daughter of ‘Supreme Junior’ 1st National BICC Pau when paired to a daughter of ‘Southfield Supreme’ 1st International Dax 17,416b. 2 - GB24N53240 Sire is a son of C & G Koopmans ‘Amano Alzina’ and G & S Verkerks ‘Fire Eyes x Flying Wonder’ the parents of our 1st Section, 2nd National NFC Messac 4,563b 2024. Dam is a daughter of ‘Rolex’ 1st National NFC Saintes 2015 for Crammond and Langstaff paired to our Leideman hen ‘Liebling’ the dam of our 2nd UK, 28th Open (1st drop) Pattaya Int PR Final (530km) 5,854b 2024. 3 - GB24N53102 Sire is a son of ‘Rolex’ 1st National Saintes 2015 paired to a sister of Gino Clicque’s 2nd National Argenton. The dam is a yearling hen bought as part of a racing kit from the Van Laer brothers of Belgium. 4 - GB24N53276 Sire is a son of J Hooymans ‘New Harry’ and the father of our 2nd UK, 28th Open (1st drop) Pattaya Int PR Final (530km) 5,854b 2024. Dam is a daughter of Gino Clicque’s ‘Golden Prince’ 1st National Ace KBDB LD when paired to ‘Boxster’ With the race being more difficult than expected yesterday and everybody struggling we were pleased to get 14/29 on the day. We have already had a couple return early this morning so fingers crossed everyone waiting for their pigeons get better returns today. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Gower for winning the National on a very trying day. 1st Club - 3rd,4th,5th,7th,8th,9th,10th,12th,13th,14th,15th,16th,17th,18th,19th Wincanton BB&O Federation 1277 birds
Yesterday we raced with the British Barcelona Club from Guernsey and with a strong northeast wind it turned out to be a tough race for the youngsters.
We had 5 come together in just over 4 hours to provisionally score 2nd Section, 3rd Open. The first through the trap was a full brother to ‘61’ our 2023 1st National BICC Alencon winner. ‘128’ is a grandson of Gino Clicques ‘Bro Golden Devil’ x ‘Nest Sister Limo’ and ‘Southfield Champ’ 1st National NFC Saintes & ‘Lady B’ 1st Open MNFC Bordeaux for Mark Williamson. Of the 5 that dropped Bro Golden Devil’, ‘Nest Sister Limo’ & ‘Lady B’ were grandparents of 3 of them. We had just over 50 percent returns yesterday but they have started to drop in this morning. Congratulation to Derek Vincent for the win and also to team Kenny & Armstrong for winning our section. We were pleased to find out that we have not only won the NFC National Ace bird but also won the National Flying Club Champion of Champions competition this year.
